So the bottom line is there is no standard even for HD. Formats used include MPEG1, MPEG2, MotionJPEG, MPEG4, Quicktime, AVI but that is not an exhaustive list. MPEG4 and AVI are file containers that may have non-standard encoding, especially for audio. Check the specs for the camera first, some manufacturers hide that information so that is a clue you may get an albatross that will be difficult to use in your computer.
